Heart and Soul

One of my most favorite things to see is to watch others give their heart away as their soul travels with others on a journey that will last forever.  I was there, but she didn’t know it.  I was watching, but she didn’t see me.  In the few seconds that the moment lasted, the memory of that moment will live on, but not just in those people who were directly involved, but those of us that saw it as well.  To the others who were there that may have been oblivious to what was going on, some of us were paying attention.  The reminder of true unselfishness appeared in a flash yesterday, and I had a permanent smile on my face for the rest of my day.  If I had blinked, I would have missed it.  It may even happen at other times when I am not around, but ever grateful I saw this one.  Someone gave her heart away, without a second to think about it, and lit up the heart of another as those little eyes and the innocent smile beamed as she walked away.  That is what true giving is about — no expectations, no keeping score.  “It’s that wonderful old-fashioned idea that others come first and you come second.  This was the whole ethic by which I was brought up.  Others matter more than you do, so ‘don’t fuss, dear; get on with it.’ – Audrey Hepburn.  Have you seen what I am talking about?  I also heard this morning about a star high school football player in Michigan who could have easily run in to score a touchdown at a game in October, but ran out-of-bounds at the one-yard line.  WHY?  Because another player had lost his dad unexpectedly two days earlier and they wanted to give that player a chance to score…to honor his dad.  The coach and the star player had planned for that opportunity to come up so when it did, they took it and gave something that comes so easily to some so that another that be the recipient of feeling cared for, thought of, and loved.  Although what I saw might not have included a star football player and a teammate, I saw someone give her heart away. As I watched it unfold, I also thought I saw how much meaning it had for her as well as I got a glimpse of how much she loves to be where she is right now.  Truly, without a doubt, her soul inspired others to do the same and to continue that legacy.  In a mere 15 seconds, she changed that little girl’s life…FOR GOOD.
